At one point in early 2008, Kenya was headed that direction. Most of the ingredients were in place from perceived and historical tribal prejudices and inequalities, politicians who were prepared to use all means necessary to grasp and cling on to power, a disenfranchised population who were only concerned with naval gazing, and a trigger in the form of a discredited election process. The thing that gave me the most confidence about Kofi Annan mediating the talks in Kenya is that when he was reflecting on his time as the UN Secretary General just before the end of his tenure - he made a point of saying that his biggest regret was that the genocide in Rwanda happened on his watch. Kenya gave him a chance to redeem himself and he was never going to let Kenya slide into an abyss that none of us ever want to think of again.
